CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocated to this class are non-peace officer positions assigned to provide security in and around County facilities and properties of public agencies contracting Sheriff Department security services. Positions in this class are distinguished from the lower level class of Security Assistant, Sheriff by the requirement to carry a firearm while in the performance of their duties and more extensive knowledge of departmental security techniques, policies and procedures, and the exercise of independent judgment in providing security at both County facilities and other public facilities as designated by the Sheriff. Incumbents must distinguish between circumstances in which counseling, admonition and explanation will serve to maintain a peaceful environment or where the intervention of law enforcement personnel is necessary, and respond to and/or report situations appropriately. Incumbents of this class serve a nine (9) month probationary period during which they receive training in the care and use of firearms, proper firearms safety procedures, and related training in Department regulations and legal limitations on the use of firearms or other forms of force under Section 831 of the Penal Code.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
AGE:
18 years of age at the time of filing.
EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent high school proficiency or higher.
Evidence of equivalent high school proficiency includes having successfully passed the GED, TASC, HiSET, or CHSPE.
To determine if a foreign diploma is equivalent to those of U.S. high schools, the foreign transcripts must be evaluated by one of the approved organizations listed on the State of California's Commission on Teacher Credentialing website,
http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl635.pdf, or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, http://www.naces.org/members.htm. These organizations are private enterprises who charge a fee for their services.
LICENSE:
A valid California class "C" driver license is required to perform job-related essential functions. California applicants must possess a current, non-expired California class "C" or above driver license at the time of filing.
Out of state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing and will be required to obtain a California class "C" or above driver license at the time of hire.
Successful applicants for this position will be required to submit a copy of their California driver license during the background investigation. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

Supplemental Questionnaire
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.
EXAMINATION CONTENT
The examination will consist of a written test, weighted 100%, assessing vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing clarity, spelling, grammar, deductive and inductive reasoning, and data interpretation. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the written test in order to be placed on the Eligible Register. Applicants who fail the written test may retake the test once every twelve (12) months.
The written test is not reviewable by applicants per Civil Service Rule 7.19.

SCORE TRANSFERS
Applicants who achieve a passing score within the last eighteen (18) months for any of the Law Enforcement Job Family (LEJF) examinations will have their written test score automatically transferred to all LEJF examinations for which they have applied. Scores are valid for eighteen (18) months. The LEJF includes the following positions: Deputy Sheriff - Lateral (DS-Lateral), Deputy Sheriff Trainee – P.O.S.T. Trained (DST-POST), Deputy Sheriff Trainee (DST), Custody Assistant (CA), Security Officer (SO), and Security Assistant (SA).
SPECIAL INFORMATION
REAPPLY PROCEDURE
Applicants who have participated in the examination process for any one of the LEJF examinations listed above, and did not achieve a passing score, must wait twelve (12) months after the date of any failed test component to reapply for any of the LEJF examinations. Reapplying continuously will override the existing application and will cause a delay in the processing of the application. Only the most current application will be considered.
Applicants who do not agree to the work conditions and/or who fail the background questionnaire section in the supplemental questionnaire may not reapply until twelve (12) months from the date of the failed component.
Applicants who withdraw from the hiring process during the background investigation period will have to wait twelve (12) months from the withdrawal date to reapply.
FAILURE TO APPEAR
If you fail to appear to the written test administration you will not be able to reapply for the position for twelve (12) months.
DISQUALIFICATION
The background questionnaire section of the supplemental questions are utilized to ensure applicants meet the standards of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the background questionnaire section in the supplemental questions will be disqualified and will have to wait (12) months from the date of the disqualification to reapply.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Candidates who successfully complete the background investigation, and are selected for appointment, will be extended an offer of employment that is conditional upon the results of their medical examination, which includes a psychological evaluation.

Benefit Information: Depending on the position, the successful candidate will enroll in a contributory defined benefit pension plan if the candidate is a “new member” of the County’s defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013 (first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012) – unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. It should be noted that County employees do not pay into Social Security, but do pay the Medical Hospital Insurance Tax portion of Social Security at a rate of 1.45%.
